3 Myths About Hiring an Interior Designer

Welcome to the Fifteen Twelve Home Co. blog! We’re going to try to be as present on these blogs here as we can— updating at least a few times a month. Since Fifteen Twelve is all about good design being attainable to all— lets chat for a second about some of the myths and misconceptions we have heard about hiring an interior designer— shall we?

Myth 1: Interior Design is all about just making things look pretty

I mean, yes that’s an element of Interior Design, and sometimes why people hire a designer in the first place. But lets go a little deeper. Interior Designers do so much more than just pick finishes. They anticipate client needs, space plan, organize and coordinate work to be done, solve problems that come up in the project and so much more. The knowledge that they carry in their heads goes beyond what fabric to pick for the pillows (but lets face it, that’s like— the most fun part!) Interior Designers carry knowledge about which textile/paint/flooring/hardware etc. is most appropriate for the room and the people that live in the room. They know which finish will be best for kids and pets, and which is a little more high maintenance. They have their finger on the button of what is a trend, what is classic, and what finish a home owner may end up regretting in the future. They plan spaces to not only work now, but transition in the future as seasons of life change for their clients. Good interior designers take a holistic approach— factoring in not only what is on the surface of a room design, but what will make life enjoyable and maybe even easier for the person who lives in a space.

Myth 2: Interior Designers are Limited to Their Own Style

While it’s true that each designer has their own style, a good interior designer works with what the client wants and their own needs and style. Being able to be adaptable helps to marry the desires of the client with the direction and solutions the designer brings to the project.

Myth 3: Hiring an Interior Design is Expensive and Requires a Large budget

Hiring an Interior Designer can definitely be really expensive— but it depends on who you go with.
